Eligibility Guidelines

Grades Are
The First
Gatekeeper.

You can run a 4.4 forty, but if you don’t pass the Eligibility Center, you can’t play. It’s that simple.

Reality Check: The NCAA evaluates your “Core Course GPA,” not just your overall high school GPA.

To Qualify for a Scholarship

To compete in your first year, you must meet the academic benchmarks for your target division. D1 and D2 each have distinct course and GPA requirements — and the differences matter.

Division 1 (FBS/FCS)

2.3 Min Core GPA 16 Core Courses

You must complete 10 of these before your senior year (“10/7 Rule”). Those grades are locked in permanently.

4 YrsEnglish
3 YrsMath (Algebra 1+)
2 YrsNatural / Physical Science
1 Yr Add’l English / Math / Science
2 YrsSocial Science
4 YrsAdditional (Any of above + Foreign Lang)

Division 2

2.2 Min Core GPA 16 Core Courses

Note the difference in Math / English requirements compared to D1. D2 offers more flexibility but still requires Eligibility Center registration.

3 YrsEnglish
2 YrsMath (Algebra 1+)
2 YrsNatural / Physical Science
3 YrsAdd’l English / Math / Science
2 YrsSocial Science
4 YrsAdditional (Any of above + Foreign Lang)

NAIA, JUCO & D3 Requirements

Not every path runs through the NCAA Eligibility Center. These divisions have their own standards — and in some cases, far more flexibility.

NAIA

A valid alternative to NCAA with different rules.

  • 2.3 GPA (Cumulative) — Full qualifier
  • — OR MEET 2 OF 3 —
  • 2.0 GPA
  • Top 50% Class Rank
  • 860 SAT / 18 ACT
NAIA Eligibility Center →

JUCO (NJCAA)

Great for developing academics or athletics before transferring.

  • HS Diploma or GED
  • 2.0 GPA
  • SAT / ACT usually not required (check specific school)

NCAA Division 3

Academics handled by the school’s admissions office, not the NCAA.

  • No NCAA Minimum GPA
  • Must meet the specific college’s admission standards
  • Create a “Profile Page” account with NCAA

How to Register

You must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center to take an Official Visit or sign a National Letter of Intent. Start early — processing takes time.
